The D70 is the digital SLR for the masses. A very well-rounded camera that will make many a digital newcomer happy. Considering that you can control so much more with a D70 than you can with the Digital Rebel, those that prefer manual to auto won’t have any troubles paying an extra US$100 for the privilege.

Still, despite its few bumps, we award the D70 with the sash and tiara for its excellent image-quality, speed, reliability, and wealth of features for the price. We love it—and we’d buy it.

Highly recommended for advanced amateurs who are looking for more functionality than the cheaper entry-level DSLRs provide, or for the professional who requires a durable and hard-wearing back-up body.

Imaging Resource (96)

Whatever your interests, the bottom line is that the D70S is an exceptionally capable, well-performing digital SLR, every bit worthy of the storied Nikon name.

If you’re looking for a digital SLR that produces the absolute best image results at the lowest price, but doesn’t give you as many options, I would suggest checking out the Canon EOS Digital Rebel. It’s a smart little camera that is aimed to impress. However, the Nikon D70 will wow you with its speed, flexibility, and sleek appeal, and it’s guaranteed to show you a good time. If you haven’t done so already, I would check this camera out. I don’t think you’ll be disappointed.

For those who have been tempted by a digital SLR and don’t have the investment in glass, the D70 opens the door to a very extensive and world-famous brand that has always taken a full-system approach to their line, which this camera folds into neatly. And anyone stepping up from a digicam will find the digital SLR experiencea revelation.

Photography REVIEW (95)

I was impressed with the quality of the D70s images and with the camera’s build quality. It is an excellent camera and a great value at the suggested retail price. It performs as promised, and provides inexperienced and experienced photographers alike a very capable camera.

ThinkCamera (90)

This camera meets the needs of many. The digital vari-programs will suit those who still prefer a method of photography closer to point and shoot; on top of which, if you don’t want to get your hands dirty with exposure, there’s always Program mode. This sparks up bracketing and other ways to optimise image quality. Professionals and anoraks will revel in the plethora of options (only some of which I have covered). However, both beginners and advanced users will benefit from this camera’s main strengths – build quality, great design and great image processing.

Steve's Digicams (90)

Nikon’s D70s is a refinement of one of the most successful amateur dSLR’s ever produced. While its resolution falls 2-megapixels short of Canon’s industry-leading Digital Rebel XT, the D70s offers very good shooting performance and excellent image quality. Users of consumer digicams will find that the D70s’ responsiveness, viewfinder clarity, and image quality at high ISO settings overcome the limitations of their current equipment.

Pocket-lint (90)

Overall the D70 is a spectacularly good digital SLR. The speed of the drive, the size of image buffer and strange decision not to make an external booster battery to fit the camera are the only signs this is not designed for the professional market, well that and the price. This is the sort of camera that the masses are hankering to own and the professionals would be proud to turn to as a back up or a lighter ‘in-the-field’ body.

Digital Camera Magazine (80)

You’ll need to spend some time with your head in the manual, but it’s worth it. This is one of the best budget SLRs on the market. The potential image quality is excellent, and the degree of control you have is stunning. Be warned, though: you will need to put in a lot of post-shoot editing work to produce top images.

The D70s is basically the popular D70 with a slightly larger LCD screen. It’s an excellent 6.1MP D-SLR, but our Editors’ Choice remains the Canon Rebel XT, an excellent (and less expensive) 8MP D-SLR.

The D70s is a very good camera, but it’s not a very good value. If you already own Nikon lenses, then the D70s is an obvious choice. And if you don’t have Nikon lenses, you’ll want to handle it yourself to see if you like its feel better than the competition.
