It must be remembered that it’s an entry-point camcorder which comes with a low price tag and is aimed at the beginner who seeks the convenience of recording direct to DVD rather than to digital tape (such as MiniDV). Whilst video clips are stored as compressed MPEG-2 video files rather than the higher specification DV stream of tape cams, this should deter the newbie from buying what is a good, basic camcorder for beginners and uncritical users who don’t want any fuss.

With vast improvements in manual control options, external layout, and intuitive menu navigation, the VDR-D100 definitely offers more than its predecessor, the VDR-M53. Unfortunately, if audio or hybrid functionality is important, the VDR-D100 is going to disappoint, and the M53 or D200 become good alternate options.

The D100 has all the conveniences inherent in DVD camcorders, and ease of use is not too much of a concern. All the great manual controls that Panasonic provides are there for the neophyte to learn on. It’s pretty clear that the D100 is the leader in the entry level DVD camcorder space providing more versatility than any other model. For a DVD camcorder, this is not a bad choice.
