The HDR-UX1 is potentially great for the prosumer who wants to get features like a large LCD screen, improved control, and more inputs and outputs that will allow them to make great videos.

Up until just before the HDR-UX1’s release, we were tied on what to name the best DVD camcorder, the DCR-DVD505 or Panasonic’s VDR-D300. Once the UX1 was released, there was really no contest.

Videomaker (82)

Overall, the HDR-UX1 is a power player in a rather mundane group of DVD camcorders. It’s an easy to use camcorder with a great set of features. Assuming Sony massages out the few compression kinks in the coming releases of AVCHD camcorders, this could be a great first HD solution for consumer and intermediate shooter.

The Sony Handycam HDR-UX1 is a very nice camcorder; unfortunately, its myriad compatibility issues make it almost impossible to recommend over other similar models.

As the first DVD-based high definition camcorder the UX1 has good quality video, but misses out on practicality.
