If you are in the least bit sporty and like your gadgets then it may be that you already have some sort of heart rate monitor, GPS or other kit designed to monitor your progress to the Nth degree. For such people, the W710i is probably not going to add anything to the arsenal of useful technology, but for others it could be a useful gadget.

Though the W710i is not exactly the dream phone I thought it would be, its pros outweighs its cons enough for it to be a keeper. Overall, it is an excellent phone for joggers and runners — and for those who always want to have their fitness progress at hand.

While I don’t consider it to be one of the better looking handsets the company has created, the Sony Ericsson W710i is still a very capable and fun handset to use. It might not have a best in class camera, but the music playback (with stereo Bluetooth support) and the built-in pedometer make it a great companion for commuters and athletically inclined people alike. If not for some issues with audio quality on calls, I might have been convinced to give the W710i a higher rating, but as is, I instead give it an enthusiastic “Recommended” rating.

And even though they have very limited functionality, e.g. there is no training schedule available, like on Nokia 5500, many simply won’t notice these flaws, especially when offered constant evaluation of covered distance and spent calories.

If I had to choose between this and the Nokia 5500 Sport for fitness use I would choose this handset because it lets you calibrate the pedometer. In actuality, I would rather choose neither. The camera is a little wobbly, as is battery life. On the upside, Sony Ericsson provides PC Connectivity, plus there is an FM radio and a good music player. Additionally, the front screen is large enough to be useful, the side buttons for music control work very well and I even rather like the clamshell design.
