The “P” in Nikon Coolpix P4 stands for “Performance”, and overall this camera delivers on that promise. This is a fairly compact camera that you can take everywhere, which is well-designed in the sense that it is intuitive to use, rather than good to look at.

The Nikon Coolpix P4 may not be the smallest, lightest or even most stylish compact digital camera available, but it makes up for this with by being packed with features and producing excellent quality images.

So, in summary, while some indoor shot captured with the P4 occasionally require some adjustments with software for sharpness or colour balance, those shot with good outdoor light, rarely need adjustments. Indeed, the Coolpix P4 produces excellent high definition images that are very well exposed and print out beautifully.

Nikon’s Coolpix P4 is a capable compact digicam that produces good quality 8-megapixel images and VGA sized movies. Beginners will enjoy its fully automatic and scene assist modes, while intermediate users will be able to get creative with Aperture priority and the range of adjustments available in Programmed auto mode.

The Nikon Coolpix P4 is a solid offering without really setting off any fireworks. It has plenty of megapixels, takes a good photo and is well built. In my tests it also does well in lowlight and minimises red eye.

Digital Trends (80)

Although the Coolpix P4 has its flaws—uneven focusing, noise at high ISOs and a funky control layout—you could do a lot worse for an 8MP primarily point-and-shoot digicam. Picture quality-<del>for the most part</del>-was quite good and you’d be pleased with the results. The P4 is not the fastest camera on the block so keep that in mind especially if shooting soccer or football games will be part of your repertoire.

TrustedReviews (80)

In the Coolpix P4 Nikon has produced an excellent all-rounder, a pocket compact camera with a wider than average zoom range, a useful selection of features and options, and superb image quality. It is rather expensive compared to its immediate competition, but the extra money buys the quality and reliability that go with the Nikon brand. If you are looking for something a little more than the average snapshot camera it is well worth a look.

If you don’t need Wi-Fi, the Nikon Coolpix P4 is a great alternative to the Coolpix P3.

Digital Photography Interface (69)

The Nikon Coolpix P4 along with its WiFi-enabled sibling, the P3, are both for casual shooting and you’re at the camera’s mercy in action shots since both have slow performance. That’s probably one of the reasons Nikon included a time lapse shooting feature – the Coolpix P4 is not for action or low-light shooting! And for a last rambling, the P4 currently sells for the same price as the P3. I wouldn’t recommend the Nikon Coolpix P4 as there are other (better) cameras worth your time.
