I highly recommend the Canon SD550 if you want a miniature, cool and capable camera with a large 2.5-inch LCD screen and impressive 7.1-megapixel resolution. The SD550 produces excellent photos with print sizes of up 13×19 inches, is fast in operation and easy to use.

Everything that the Canon Digital IXUS 750 attempts to do, it does extremely well, and it should be your automatic first choice if it meets your needs in terms of the overall specification. The Canon Digital IXUS 750 sadly won’t find a place in my pocket, but it is the perfect point and shoot camera for all those who can afford it.

All-in-all, then, the SD550 is everything the SD500 was – and a little more. Maybe not enough for a Highly Recommended (it’s still pretty costly and the lack of any real control is unusual at this level), but certainly enough to put near the top of the list for anyone looking for a luxury point-and-shooter.

The Canon PowerShot SD550 produces very good to excellent image quality - and that is the main criteria that users would (should) be mostly concerned with. Add in fast operations with no practical shutter lag, fast and precise AF that works in low-light, accurate exposure metering, and one of the most elegant and beautifully designed body on a digital camera - and you can’t go wrong if you are looking for a take-anywhere ultra compact digital camera.

Thanks to its high-speed DIGIC-II processing chip, it’s also very responsive for a subcompact digital camera, and its movie capability goes far beyond what I’m accustomed to seeing from subcompact digicam models. All in all, an excellent camera, an easy choice as a Dave’s Pick.

Camera performance is excellent in almost all areas. One area in which the camera falls short is in terms of battery life: while it’s not terrible, the SD550 is quickly being passed by the competition. Photo quality is very good on the SD550. Overall though, the SD550 is a heck of a compact point-and-shoot, and it gets my recommendation.

The Canon IXUS 750 is a very impressive digital camera. The images are really pin sharp and the build quality of the camera is equally impressive. At current pricings levels this camera certainly comes at a hefty premium. This is a very high quality digital camera nonetheless.

There’s no doubt that the Canon Digital IXUS 750 is a great little camera. It is compact, superbly well made and simply oozes style. It also takes a damn fine picture. However the inflated price compared to other equally impressive models from other manufacturers makes it an expensive luxury.

In my opinion, it shares the flagship position with the SD700 since it has more megapixels, a larger CCD and more powerful flash. The Ixus 750 is a beautiful camera that takes great looking pictures under most conditions, but it’s expensive. The Olympus SP-350 we reviewed in the February issue has an 8-megapixel sensor and 5x optical zoom for Â£234 – far better value.

At the end of the day the styling and design of this camera is aimed at a particular type of consumer. It is a feature rich model, and the features really work, each changing the color and nature of the photos (so many “advanced” features on other cameras are abysmal in action!). However, there are other cameras in the 750’s class which are cheaper and also take perfectly good pictures.
