The DCR-HC96 from Sony gives you a full-featured, compact MiniDV camcorder at an affordable price. Highlights include the Advanced HAD CCD imager, which captures stunning detail and clarity, and 10x optical zoom with Super SteadyShot picture stabilization, which focuses on distant subjects, providing clear close-up images with less distortion. The Carl Zeiss Vario-Tessar lens offers less glare and increased contrast for vivid, more life-like color and tones. A 3.3-megapixel sensor allows you to take still images that can be printed at photo quality up to 10×14 inches.

Simply DV

Despite what we’ve said about external mic and headphone output (which many users might not be bothered with anyhow) the DCR-HC96 is undoubtedly a great starter cam that’s ideal for newbies and, of course, attractively priced.

The DCR-HC96 takes great video, of that we have no doubt. But if the HC90 is still available (and it must be found somewhere), you’d have a hard case to make that the HC96 is the better buy. Not only did they remove all the ports from the body, but by putting them on the Handycam station, you now have one more thing to lug around in the camera bag. And despite Sony’s claim that the body shrunk on all their MiniDV cams, the new model is actually larger and heavier than its predecessor. This is not what we would call “progress.”

If you want an easy to use camcorder with better picture quality than an entry-level model, the HC96 might be a good choice. But if you want a camcorder that allows some degree of manual control, this is probably not the one for you.The lack of analog or audio input and the non-proprietary accessory shoe are vexing. We strongly recommend considering the Panasonic PV-GS300 before you buy.

The bottom line: Excellent video quality, a broad feature set, and decent photos make the Sony Handycam DCR-HC96 an excellent choice for those seeking a compact MiniDV camcorder.
