All things considered, the Sony DCR-HC26 is a good camera for point-and-shoot users who want a rock-solid mini DV tape format. It’s incredibly easy to use and can travel well with its small size and good battery life. If you don’t want to break the bank and are not concerned about the creme de la crop video quality, than the DCR-HC26 could be a worthy family companion.

If you’re looking for something that is really easy to use and are working on a budget this is a good camera. The picture quality isn’t the best but it’s fair and bright. Even in low lighting it seems to work alright. The Easy button, like the price reflects the HC26 is bottom of the range and really targeted at novices or new comers to the camera market. However if you’ve got a bit more cash and are likely to develop your shooting to something more than quick shots of the kids, we’d suggest looking at something in the next price bracket.

The Sony DCR-HC26 provides impressive size, zoom power, and features for a bargain-basement camcorder, but its substandard video quality is disappointing.

The Sony DCR-HC26 is the budget model for those demanding ease of use above all other concerns. The picture quality in bright light is fair to poor, while the low light performance is downright bad. The HC21, this camcorder’s predecessor, was one of the lowest ranked models last year for good reason, and the HC26 is similar in almost every regard. Now, however, even options like a cold accessory shoe have been stripped away.

The DCR-HC26 is the lowest priced model currently sold by Sony and the price is reflected in the poor image quality and minimal control options. Selling for $350, the DCR-HC26 is still slightly higher in price than most budget 1 chip models; manufacturers like Panasonic and Canon offer less expensive camcorders with more options and better image quality.
