Building on the success of Canon’s perennially popular “prosumer” EOS 20D and 30D models, the EOS 40D advances the state-of-the-art for mid-range digital SLR cameras, making it a natural first choice for advanced amateur photographers and entry-level professionals, and an ideal second body for more established photo pros. Indeed, given the level of feature upgrades and improvements, technological wizardry, and user-requested creative controls, the Canon EOS 40D SLR’s “prosumer” appellation may refer more to its accessible price point than to the exceptional quality, clarity, and resolution of the images it creates.

This DSLR from Canon performs so well that finding something to criticize about it was difficult. Although it is missing some features compared to other cameras in its class, nearly everything that the Canon EOS 40D does, it does very well.

A beautifully engineered upgrade that’s a no-brainer for Canon fans. There probably aren’t enough new selling points here to convert die-hard Nikon fans, but for committed Canon users who want a camera they won’t grow out of quickly, the 40D is a no-brainer.

It’s hard not to like the Canon EOS-40D. It’s a digital SLR that does just about everything you could possibly want—and it does them all well. While it remains to be seen how it will compare to new offerings from the competition, the 40D is still good enough to recommend without the slightest hesitation.

The Imaging Resource!

As I’ve said in the past about other cameras in the line, the Canon EOS 40D is an excellent photographic tool, slightly evolved to take advantage of recent technological advances. This time there are more bells and whistles, but they don’t take away from the Canon 40D’s ability to make great pictures.

The Bottom Line – there’s a lot to like about the 40D. If you’re looking for a 10-megapixel camera that can fire long bursts, is compatible with a mature system of professional accessories, and creates superb images in almost any light, look no further.

It’s a very good camera and I can recommend it. I didn’t just review the 40D, I bought one myself, so that should tell you something!

Yes, this camera is for the Rebel XTi owner looking to move up in toughness and burst rate, but it’s also tough enough and fast enough to serve as the backup body for a Mark III-toting journalist.

The strengths of the Canon EOS 40D overshadow any minor drawbacks. It is a powerful, scalable camera. This is a great step-up model whose versatility will grow along with a keen photographer.

But perhaps the most striking thing about the Canon EOS 40D is its value. It’s true that it costs more than other 10-megapixel cameras, but it’s also much more professionally-orientated. The Canon EOS 40D’s strength doesn’t lie in any great technological breakthrough but in its professional appeal and its sheer value for money.

If you’re looking for an upgrade to an entry level DSLR then the 40D will blow your socks off and can be heartily recommended, but if you were saving up for a Nikon D300 then it might not do enough to change your mind, but we’ll have to wait for the review sample of that, probably next month. Otherwise, a very capable, exciting camera, offering high quality for less than a grand.

Good Gear Guide

For at least a little while it appears the Canon 40D is king of the hill. While the Nikon D80 and D200 both provide reasonable alternatives for enthusiasts, and the Nikon D40x and Canon EOS 400D are both more suitable options for amateurs, the 40D’s blend of great pictures, rugged construction and speedy operation make it a great purchase.

Negatives? We’re always more critical of cameras such as the EOS 40D, which come with such a strong heritage, but even with that in mind it’s truly difficult to find any serious issues.

In terms of image quality, the 40D’s photos look great, but not significantly better than the 30D’s. The 40D’s noise levels are very low, though not any lower than the 30D. The 40D’s dynamic range is excellent, and slightly improves on the 30D. Color accuracy is almost identical, but the 40D’s resolution is less than impressive, even with the extra megapixels.

On the whole, it is a powerful, scalable camera. If you’re graduating from a Rebel-series digital SLR, this is a great step-up model whose versatility will grow along with you. And if you’re a more advanced shooter or a pro looking for something smaller and less costly than Canon’s top-tier cameras (the 1D and 5D series), this camera is perfect for you.

Pocket-lint

In a nutshell, this is a cracking camera and one marred only by the odd metering performance, otherwise it is quite simply excellent and worth a close inspection for anyone either trading up or for those pros’ that need a back up body that is not a compromise to far.
