Trendy phones hit the big time with the ubiquitous Motorola RZR which spawned so many versions that one in every two people seems to own one. Since then more and more manufacturers have been going down the fashion route with pink phones a plenty and Cath Kidson designed Nokias (whoever she is).

The Motorola K1 is a very nice phone, but it is like so many things; it has the looks, but not the brains to go with them. I thought there were a lot of things in need of improvement.

The Motorola KRZR K1 is a handset that has unfortunately had more of a focus on design than the actual internal functionality. The K1 does have some impressive features, like a 2mpx digital camera, microSD memory card support, quad-band GSM compatibility, and dual 262k colour displays, but there were some major downfalls. The operating system lag was the big killer for me during testing.

The PEBL feels lovely in the hand but I found its clam opening system pesky, while the V3 felt just too big. The KRZR K1 is narrow – 42mm – and feels very comfortable in my fairly small hands. Its deep blue is also very appealing.

Motorola’s MOTOKRZR K1 is the company’s first major update to the popular RAZR V3 phone, but doesn’t quite match the original’s groundbreaking design. Motorola has downsized the phone and added new features but didn’t improve on some of the basics, which in the end let down the entire package.

After the astronomical success of the original RAZR V3 handset, Motorola have been pumping out RAZR-like handsets in many different shapes and sizes. The KRZR K1 follows the styling of the original RAZR but is instead narrower than the V3. It isn’t quite as thin as the V3, but does come close at only 16mm.
