The Coolpix P3 features a 1/1.8-inch CCD and, because it offers 8.1 effective megapixels of image resolution, it delivers outstanding imaging power that’s not only enough to show beautiful skin texture and capture the myriad colors of the human eye, it also means shots stay breathtakingly clear even when significantly enlarged. The Coolpix P3 incorporates a high-quality 3.5x Zoom-Nikkor lens with a focal range equivalent to that of a 36-126mm lens in 35mm format. This provides ample opportunity to zoom in for close compositions, zoom right out to capture breathtaking scenery and even enjoy macro shooting from as close as 4 centimeters.

Overall, image quality is superb, some frame filling shots of colourful rugs are so detailed and sharp that even stray carpet fibers are clearly defined in the photos.

The P3 is a great camera whether you are a beginner or intermediate photographer. There are many options at your disposal and the specs are sure to keep you happy. Such features as the vibration reduction, WiFi connectivity, 8MP images and great battery life make the $400 price tag easier to stomach.

Not a bad feature set to pack in your pocket or purse, and certainly a Dave’s Pick for its image quality, solid styling and enough options to make the Nikon Coolpix P3 a serious power photo tool.

Digital Camera Review

The Nikon Coolpix P3 (and P4) is a good choice for people looking to upgrade from their first digital camera and get a camera with more features. It would also make a great choice as a second camera to a more experienced photographer who doesn’t want to carry their digital SLR with them.

Overall, the Nikon Coolpix P3 is a competent compact that takes excellent pictures. It is an unobtrusive camera that is easy to use and like. It doesn’t look fancy like some of today’s ultra-slims or prior “swivel-body” Nikons. Instead, the P3 counts on Nikon quality and some interesting technology to impress.

Steve's Digicams

Nikon’s Coolpix P3 is a capable compact digicam that produces good quality 8-megapixel images and VGA sized movies. Beginners will enjoy its fully automatic and scene assist modes, while intermediate users will be able to get creative with Aperture priority and the range of adjustments available in Programmed auto mode.

To sum up, the P3 is a pretty handy camera that is well capable of helping you capture precious memories in vivid digital impressions. Of course, the noteworthy points are the VR modes and Wi-Fi connection, which considering its small and highly manageable form for ease of use when on the go means the US$449.95 P3 is definitely worthy of a consideration.

There’s something definitely likeable about these two new Coolpix models. While the sleek, rounded metal construction definitely owes something to Canon’s latest top-of-the-line ELPH models, because these Coolpixes are cast from aluminum they feel lighter and more resistant to scratching.

The Nikon Coolpix P3 is a solid if slightly unspectacular digital camera. It has eight megapixels, image stabilisation and also offers WiFi connectivity. Everything appear to be in the right place and picture quality is good as well.

Overall I liked, but didn’t love, the Coolpix P3. Still, if you want a portable, high resolution camera with image stabilization and Wi-Fi then definitely check it out. If you like what the P3 has to offer but don’t care about Wi-Fi then you can save a few bucks by buying the Coolpix P4 instead.

Nikon’s Coolpix P3 is a proficient compact digital camera that produces pleasing 8-megapixel images at low ISO’s and good quality movies. Beginning digital photographers will enjoy the P3’s Auto and Scene modes. More advanced users will likely be disappointed with the camera’s lack of manual control and image quality at higher ISO’s. The WiFi and VR are a nice additions but I wouldn’t recommend purchasing the camera based on those features.

Digital Photography Review

A good camera, but unfortunately not a great camera, and one that just misses out on a recommendation, not because the final picture quality is poor, but because it can be quite a challenge getting there.

Like its older siblings, the P1 and P2, the Nikon Coolpix P3 has a limited Wi-Fi capability and excellent image quality. Better value and quicker performance can be found in the company’s nonwireless offerings.

Sadly, the P3 also has the same weaknesses as the P4 – namely poor battery life, no high sensitivity options and slow performance. Despite the limited manual controls, over aperture that is (among other things), there’s still no full manual mode or shutter speed control here. There’s no live histogram either. Thankfully for the new user, a wagon full of scene modes and built-in camera help are available.

Even though the Nikon Coolpix P3 shows improved image quality compared to its predecessors, this camera is still lacking in important areas compared to other compact digital cameras.

Consumer Guide

The only significant area where the Coolpix P3 is average (or a little below average) is in its response times, which are poor for a $400 digital camera. Be prepared to wait 4-5 seconds after pressing the power button to take your first photo. Our tests showed that shutter lag can be as much as 1 second when using auto-focus, and shot-to-shot delays run from 2-9 seconds.

The images produced from the Coolpix P3 were of a very similar standard to those from the P4, particularly when the VR function was used as images were very clear and sharp. The Face Priority AF function was pretty impressive and as it focuses on the faces within an image you can be assured that the end result is amazingly clear and detailed. The menu is really easy to use and to find your way around and you will probably find that after a few days you can put the manual away as everything you need to use is in the menu.
